Give the AI a job, not a superlative

Ten roles for drafting, strategy, honest assessment, red-teaming and verification—each designed to produce a different kind of useful work.

Different jobs need different eyes

“Give me the best legal answer” is vague. A specific role plus instructions about how to answer produces more disciplined work. Replace the words in square brackets with your task, provide the necessary context, then verify every important factual and legal proposition.

A persona is an angle, not a qualification

The AI does not become a barrister, judge or lawyer because the prompt says so. These roles force different modes of analysis. They do not create professional duties, confidential legal advice or reliable authorities.

01 · Draft

The Silk

Precise court-document drafting.

02 · Map

The Tier-1 Strategist

Options, pressure points and sequencing.

03 · Assess

The Impartial Senior Lawyer

An honest view from both sides.

04 · Attack

Opposing Counsel

Red-team the position before they do.

05 · Decide

The Judge

Test how the material may land on the bench.

06 · Negotiate

The Master Negotiator

Prepare for the room and its trade-offs.

07 · Explain

The Translator

Plain English without dumbing it down.

08 · Break

The Stress-Tester

Assume the plan is wrong and find out how.

09 · Examine

The Evidence Analyst

Admissions, contradictions and gaps.

10 · Decide

The Costs-and-Risk Realist

Ask whether the avenue is worth carrying.

Power add-ons

Add one or two of these to any role. More instructions are not automatically better; use the line that corrects the failure you are trying to prevent.

Use a three-pass workflow

PASS 01

Create

Draft with the Silk or map options with the Strategist.

PASS 02

Attack

Give the result to Opposing Counsel or the Stress-Tester.

PASS 03

Decide

Run the revised work through the Judge, Impartial Lawyer or Risk Realist.

A light Ash v Machine workflow
Ash could draft his response to the “vexatious” letter with the Silk, let Opposing Counsel identify every emotional sentence that creates a new argument, then ask the Judge which parts matter to an independent decision-maker. The value is not pretending that three AI personas are three lawyers. The value is forcing one draft through three different questions.

Keep the context controlled

  • Give the role a short factual brief before the task.
  • State the jurisdiction, court, stage and document type.
  • Ask deliberately for weaknesses and contrary arguments.
  • Separate facts, allegations, inference and unknowns.
  • Protect privileged, confidential and court-restricted information.
  • Open every cited case, statute and rule in a primary source.
  • Never paste AI output directly into a filing without reading every word.
